The end of the first book happens only after a pretty massive change from a character we meet only a few times. And people change in this book, but that change is often unexplained. People in the military or emergency services have a different cadence and vocabulary than civilians. In book 3 the story is brought to such a rapid, convenient, unearned conclusion that you palpably sense his desire to get out of this world that makes no sense. Even Hugh Howey realized these books don’t really work.
